A sculpture in the making

To add to this year’s Free Free Fringe Festival we are in the process of making a giant #Sculpture which will stand on it’s own at the front of the saloon bar in Drumcoura!...The sculpture will be an “avant garde horse” rearing 5 meters high sitting in it’s own spot near the beautiful lake of Drumcoura.

The idea of a sculpture as part of the Free Fringe Festival came easily as the Festival attracts artists and the likes inspiring creativity allowing us to take it to another level.
First came the call of 3 artists (Denise Terry,Tina Brogan,Angelica Lodge), an engineer (Dave Hodson) and a photographer (Didier Riva AKA Didier Riva Photography) who came together in January to meet for the first time. Then weekly discussions to decide on a “theme”. As it is going to be placed in the beautiful Drumcoura and surrounded by horses and nature the artists soon began to vision a rearing friesian horse made from wood and metal with planted areas for the tail and main.

Next the drawings, measuring and lots of “mini sculptures” were made. Once the half size sculpture came into life the artists decided the best frame was going to have to be made from metal square scaffold like poles to ensure its sturdiness. The challenge was to find a metal engineers close by to make the frame. After St Patrick's day parade in Ballinamore we met John McCartin, owner of local company Newtowngore Engineering in Co. Leitrim, who quickly agreed to take the task on and a week later the half scale wooden transformer looking prototype (pictured) went off to take its next stage of life!

Update 5th May 2017
After 2 weeks and lots of trips to Newtowngore Engineers, engineer “Anthony Mimna” delivered the 5 metre high metal skeleton of the sculpture!

So the next prep work has been getting underway, which was the concrete base! First the hole had to be dug out by (Kevin McCabe) our digger saviour! Then we had to think of steel legs which were sunk into the concrete base and wrapped in plastic to create a barrier between the legs and the concrete. A wooden frame was made with the measurements from the bottom base of the sculpture to ensure it would fit accurately into the space. Then the concrete arrived and within 2 hrs the base for the creature was SET IN STONE!..Lots of stress and measuring payed off and the sculpture arrived!..Paint was applied to the steel frame of the horse and after one hour of drying time the structure was lifted into place.

We will post updates of the sculpture's progress here over the coming months leading up to the Free Fringe Festival and the unveiling of the finished sculpture.

Update: 21st May

A few day’s later the wood arrived in Tractor and Trailor! A mix of lasting woods of  “Cedar & Larch” in different lengths and forms to create the Horse….The creators begin!!

Lengths of Cedar were attached to the metal frame with “tech screws” so that each piece of wood after that can be screwed into the Cedar..The artists had started to build the rib cage and bone body of the giant sculpture to give “Her a 3D form”.

Scaffolding is set up so the artists can reach the top of this Giant rearing Horse! And the bones are attached!.
We will post updates here over the coming months leading up to the Free Fringe Festival and the unveiling of the finished sculpture.
